Player Trading

Meet another player at the same location and swap Credits and items directly: request, offer, Ready, Confirm — and nothing moves until you both confirm.

You can trade directly with another player's character. There's no auction house, mail, or trading from across the map: you both have to be standing at the same location, and the trade happens there and then.

Two characters on the same account can trade with each other too, exactly the same way. It's how you move Credits or gear between your own characters.

Starting a trade

Open the list of characters at your location, choose the character you want to trade with to open their profile, and choose Trade. Your character waits for an answer while the request is open, so you can't start anything else — Cancel Request withdraws it at any time.

A request only lasts about 20 seconds. If it isn't answered by then it simply ends, and you're free again. It also ends if either of you leaves the location.

Trade won't work if you've blocked that player, if one of you has moved on, or while you're busy doing something. A moderation restriction on your account can stop you starting trades too, though you can still accept one. If you send a lot of requests in a short time, you'll be asked to wait a moment before sending another.

Getting a request

An incoming request never interrupts you. It appears as a card at the top of the Chat/Social panel, and the Chat/Social button lights up so you know it's there. You can keep doing whatever you were doing and answer when you're ready — or let it run out.

Choose Accept to start trading or Decline to turn it down. Several requests can wait at once; accepting one ends the others. If one player keeps sending you requests, the card offers Decline & Block, which blocks them the same way Block does everywhere else. They aren't told you blocked them.

You need to be idle to accept: if you're in the middle of something, Accept tells you to finish it first.

Building the offers

Accepting opens the trade screen for both of you. Your side is You offer; theirs is They offer, which you can see but never change. While the trade is open, neither of you can travel, work, or start anything else.

  • Credits — any whole amount up to what your character has.
  • Stackable items you're carrying, in any quantity you have.
  • Gear and other unique items you're carrying, such as a spare Cutter or a container. Each one moves as the same item, so a Cutter keeps exactly the charge it has — the trade screen shows it.

Only what's in your carried Inventory can be offered. Unequip gear and take things out of the Cargo Hold before the trade if you want to offer them. A gift is fine: one side can offer nothing at all, as long as somebody offers something.

Ready, then Confirm

When you're happy with both offers, choose Ready. Your side locks; Change Offer unlocks it. Any change to either offer clears both players' Ready, so nobody can agree to one deal and be held to another.

Once you're both Ready, the offers freeze into a final You Give / You Receive review. Check it, then choose Confirm Trade. The first player to confirm waits for the other, and can still Cancel Trade until the second confirmation goes through.

Nothing moves until both of you have confirmed. Then everything moves at once, for both of you, and the trade screen shows what you gave and received.

When a trade can't finish

At the final Confirm, RuneSpace checks the whole trade again. If either Inventory wouldn't have room or would end up too heavy, if a trade would leave either character without a usable Mining Cutter, or if something offered is no longer there, nothing moves. Both players see what went wrong, both lose Ready, and you can fix the offers and try again.

A container you receive doesn't add room until you equip it, so it can't make space for the rest of the same trade.

Either of you can Cancel Trade at any time before it completes, and nothing moves. A trade that sits for five minutes without anyone doing anything ends on its own, also with nothing moved.

Refreshing and reconnecting

A trade isn't tied to your browser tab. If you refresh, lose your connection, or come back on another device, you return to the same trade with the same offers — never a second copy of it.

RuneSpace keeps a record of every completed trade — which characters and accounts traded, where, when, and what each side gave — so trades can be looked into if something goes wrong. Safety & Privacy has the details.
